“I’m thinking about getting a business coach, but I’m not sure if it’s the right time.”

I hear this constantly. Usually from owners who’ve been thinking about it for two years, waiting for some perfect moment that never arrives. Meanwhile, they’re hemorrhaging time, missing opportunities, and building deeper patterns that get harder to break every month.

Let’s clear this up. There are absolutely wrong times to get a coach. There are also perfect times. And the cost of waiting is usually higher than you think.

The Three Wrong Times

Wrong Time 1: You’re Too Early

If you’re still validating your basic business model — still figuring out if people will actually pay for what you’re selling — coaching is premature. You don’t need systems for scaling when you haven’t proved the concept works.

I see founders in month three wanting coaching. They’ve got two customers and a dream. What they need is more customers, not a coaching framework. Prove the model first, then optimise it.

The test: Are you consistently making at least $20K per month? If not, focus on sales, not systems.

Wrong Time 2: The Chaos Is Too Deep

Sometimes the business is such a disaster that coaching can’t help until you stop the bleeding. If you can’t make payroll next week, if you’re facing legal action, if your biggest customer just walked — you need crisis management, not coaching.

Coaching works when you have bandwidth to implement changes. If you’re in pure survival mode, you won’t have the mental space or resources to action anything. Fix the immediate crisis first.

The test: Can you commit 5 hours per week to working on the business (not in it)? If everything is on fire and you’re just trying to survive until tomorrow, handle the emergency first.

Wrong Time 3: You’ve Already Checked Out

Some owners come to coaching as a last resort before selling or closing. They’re emotionally done. They hate the business. They resent their team. They dream of walking away.

Coaching requires commitment to change. If you’ve already decided you’re done, coaching becomes expensive therapy. Better to be honest about wanting out and focus on exit strategy instead.

The test: Can you imagine being excited about your business again? If the answer is no, you need an exit planner, not a coach.

The Three Right Times

Right Time 1: You’ve Plateaued

You’ve been at roughly the same revenue for 18+ months. Maybe $2M, maybe $5M, maybe $10M. The number doesn’t matter — the flatline does.

You’ve tried everything you know. Hired more people. Launched new products. Increased marketing. But revenue won’t budge. You’re playing the same game harder instead of changing the game.

This is perfect coaching territory. You don’t need to work harder — you need to work differently. A coach brings the frameworks and perspective to break through the ceiling you can’t see past.

Right Time 2: You’re Building Your First Real Team

You’ve gone from solo operator to having 3-5 employees, and suddenly everything’s harder. Communication breaks down. Quality drops. Drama increases. You spend more time managing people than doing the work.

This is the danger zone where most businesses either breakthrough or break down. Without the right structures, adding people makes everything worse. With the right structures, people become leverage.

A coach helps you build the systems, culture, and frameworks that turn a group of individuals into an actual team. The difference between having employees and having a business.

Right Time 3: You’re Planning Your Exit (In 2-5 Years)

Not tomorrow. Not when you’re desperate. But when you can see the exit on the horizon and want to maximise value before you get there.

Most owners think about exit value too late. They try to dress up the business six months before selling. Smart owners start 2-5 years out, systematically increasing enterprise value.

Coaching helps you build a business that runs without you — the single biggest value multiplier. A business dependent on the owner might sell for 2x profit. A business with systems and management? 4-6x or more.

The Hidden Cost of Waiting

Every month you wait costs more than coaching ever would. Not in fees — in opportunity.

Let’s do the maths. Say you’re stuck at $3M revenue with 15% margins. That’s $450K profit. A good coach helps you grow 20% and improve margins by 5 points. Now you’re at $3.6M revenue with 20% margins — $720K profit.

That’s $270K additional profit per year. Coaching might cost $30K. The ROI is 900%.

But the real cost isn’t financial. It’s personal. Every month you wait is another month of:

  • Working 60-hour weeks
  • Missing family events
  • Feeling trapped in operations
  • Watching competitors pass you
  • Building deeper bad habits
  • Burning out slowly

The business problems compound. But so does the personal toll. The owner who gets coaching at year 3 builds a different life than the one who waits until year 8.

The “Not Ready” Trap

“I’ll get coaching once I have more time.” “I’ll get coaching once revenue is more stable.” “I’ll get coaching once this busy period passes.”

These owners are waiting to be ready. But here’s the truth: you’re never ready. There’s never a perfect time. There’s always a reason to wait.

The busy period never passes — it just changes shape. Revenue is never stable enough. You never magically find more time. These aren’t prerequisites for coaching. They’re the problems coaching solves.

It’s like saying “I’ll go to the gym once I’m fit.” The gym is how you get fit. Coaching is how you create the time, stability, and systems you’re waiting for.

How to Know If You’re Ready

Forget perfect timing. Here’s what actually matters:

You’re coachable. You can receive feedback without defending. You can try new approaches without insisting your way is best. You can admit what you don’t know.

You’ll do the work. Coaching isn’t passive. It requires implementation. If you want someone to fix your business while you watch, hire a consultant. If you’re willing to do the work with guidance, get a coach.

You’re playing long-term. Coaching isn’t a quick fix. It’s a 6-12 month minimum commitment to fundamental change. If you need results next week, coaching isn’t the answer.

Before You Decide

Most owners spend months debating whether to get coaching. Meanwhile, their problems compound and opportunities pass. Instead of endless deliberation, get clarity.

Take 2 minutes. Answer two questions. Find out exactly where your business sits on the growth matrix. Not where you think it is — where it actually is.

Some owners discover they’re further along than they thought. Others realise why they’ve been stuck. Either way, you’ll know your actual position, not your assumed one.

Then you can make an informed decision about coaching. Not from hope or fear, but from data.

The right time for coaching isn’t about external circumstances. It’s about internal readiness. If you’re ready to change, willing to work, and committed to building something better — the time is now.

If you’re waiting for permission, consider this it.
